what it keeps
the details of each piece and its condition, typed in or scanned. models keep what's shared by every camera or lens of a kind, so a second body of the same model starts with what the first one already knows.

the day something goes missing
a camera left in a cab, a lens that didn't come back from a job, a bag gone from a car overnight. it rarely happens near home, and the first things anyone asks for are the serial number, the receipt and what you paid. for most photographers those live in a box on the top shelf of a closet, and nothing can start until you're standing in front of it.
gear keeps them with the piece: the serial, a photo of the receipt, what you paid as you entered it, your own photos of it, its repairs and their paperwork, and who had it the last time it was out. so the police report or the call to your insurer can start where you are, from your phone, wherever you can get online, with your own records in one place.
